The English social custom of Afternoon Tea was popularised in the 1840s by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, who entertained her friends at Woburn Abbey. While labourers sometimes had a small sandwich or scone brought from home with their tea, the Duchess and her friends would have enjoyed afternoon tea in the comfortable surroundings of the Abbey.
Enjoy dainty sandwiches, scones accompanied by fresh cream and fruity jam, cakes and freshly made pastries, a pot of Suki tea of your choice or coffee. Entry to the Woburn Abbey gardens is also included.
Visit the Abbey (additional charge) to view the state rooms to learn more about the lives of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford, discover great tales of imprisonment, beheadings, love affairs, Royal Pardons political reforms and Royal state visits.
